6 Metre Remote Shutter for D70?
Posted: 17 Nov 2006 at 12:45 GMT

Dear all,
A question for you D70 users - I'm looking to get the agnos 6m pole for high panoramas but I'm using a D70 which doesent support the remote control cord...
Any ideas about how to remotely operate the shutter? The remote control option wont work as it only has a range of 15 feet.
???
Cheers in advance,
Andy

Ebay has lots of generic infra red remotes claiming up to 15m range. With a reflector mirror on your camera to catch/bounce the signal it should be possible to trigger it from below. How practical or hit and miss this would be I don't know.
tinyurl.com/ym2483 auctions like the above sell wired remotes which end in a infra red beam so the signal goes down the wire and then triggers the infrared signal, they claim to do custom lengths.
In theory you could make your own. I don't know if you shine you remote control beam into one end of a fiber optic cable if it comes out the other to trigger a camera? You could experiment.
Harbortronics do a bunch of strange stuff to go with their switches but I've never been able to make out their website and they are pricey.
Oh and you know obviously get the trigger release working before buying to pole in case I'm wrong. Good luck

Hi, Are you happy to take along a laptop? Try using with 'Nikon Capture Control' If so you can find usb to network cable extenders, one local box at the laptop to convert usb to cat5 then use network cable up to 30m then a remote box to convert back to usb at the camera. The boxes only weigh a few grammes each, difficult to find in the uk though, I ended up ordering mine from a company in Vancouver a few years ago. Here's a similar one: www.usbgear.com/USBG-4XU1.html I was using it with a canon G5 on top of a 10m mast, now also use the D200, OK so long as I don't use RAW as it's usb 1.1, though thats all the D70 will connect at anyhow. Then you have full control of the camera on the ground, remember to cover the viewfinder or metering will be thrown out. Regards Marcus

For Canon I use this : www.zap-shot.com/ You only need a mini-jack plug>>nikon. Works great ! I hope you can hear the camera-click at 6 meter )

Thanks for all the thoughts.. really appreciated.
From reading up it seems that a long optical lead linked with the remote control would work. Although it looks like we may go for a D80 now as it supports a wired remote.
Its a bit annoying that the D70 doesent support wired remotes, where as the D70s does. Something to consider when buying a camera for panoramas i guess.
I'll let you all know how we get on,

I know this is a bit over the top but for my Canon camera I sometimes use a Pocket Wizard. This is a radio trigger used mainly for flash but can also be used to fire the camera. Google Pocket Wizard

The Canon Pocket wizard is neat.. the problem is with the D70 there is'nt anywhere to plug such a gadget in.

Thanks again for all the help - i have a working solution.. although Marcus, thanks yours seemed the best solution.
Being low on fund i have found that if you switch to continuous mode on the D70 you can fire off photos as the camera goes up the pole - using RAW i get approx 4 mins of time before the 1gb card fills up.
To make sure the shutter fires im using an elastic band wrapped around the camera and a pencil rubber over the shutter button.
Works a treat!
Andy -the ucl pano on the site is using this technique.. www.digitalurban.blogspot.com

Hi Andy,
Is the UCL-pano, on your site, made with the D70 + 10.5 fF? If so, how do you shoot the Zenith and Nadir?
Maybe you can show us the unstitch images?
I am very curious, Regards, Harry VRtour.eu

Harry,
Yep its D70/10.5mm lens, on a pole you cant shoot the Zenith and Nadir so note i made sure i captured the scene on plain tarmac which is easy to fill. It was a test shot and my photoshop ground clone is clearly visable in the pano. I also photoshopped the sky which was easy as their wasent much of a hole to fill.
So any shot i do will probably avoid pavements etc to cut down photoshop time.. I'll have some more online next week and let you know how i get on.

Yes its a nice panorama, well done. Seems strange though that after doing the sky you left one tiny dot right at the zenith black? Or did you just chop off the top of the panorama by accident or something.
