Tutorial: Using PTEditor to Remove your Tripod from Equirectangular Images.
Posted: 14 Jun 2006 at 13:54 GMT
I have produced a Flash tutorial on using PTEditor to remove your tripod from Equirectangular images. John Houghton taught me how to do it and it has saved me so much time!

It can be found here: www.docphot.org/?p=40

If you have any comments on how it could be improved please don't hesitate to let me know.

Thanks

Martin

iMartin, thank you SO much!

you have made my day!

a few questions...

1) how is it that your tripod head shot shows only the tripod head base? in other words, where did your pano head go? if i do a down shot with the tripod in the pic, it shows my tripod head, tripod legs and pano head.

2) i assume, and correct me if i am wrong, that this method is only effective in panos with not very detailed patterns on the floor. for example, i can't imagine the patch tool to replace the tripod working on an intricate nadir shot like the tiles at www.spain720.com/eng/accommodations. i used the nadir patch technique in Eric Rougiers video to patch that one and use it to patch all my nadirs but as long as the floor is not too complex, the PTEditos solution looks great. does this make sense?

3) maybe you can put up a zip file with the .swf in it so we can download it and have it local on our computers in the event that you ever have to remove it from the www.

saludos & thanks again,
jer...

Jer... Thanks for the comments.

1) There is no down shot this was taken with a Canon 20D and Sigma 8mm 4 around. The Head is a Nodal Ninja 2.

2) The technique is best for none discript floors but can be used for some quite complex shapes. If you use the Alt key with the patch tool you can do straight lines. I also swear by a Wacom tablet for all my photo-retouching.

3) Will do.

Martin, the flash tutorial is very effective. Just a couple of comments:

You say at one point that you can change the size of the PTEditor window by dragging the sides in or out. This is true, but of more interest is that you can zoom in or out to change what is included in the window by using click + shift or ctrl.

When you suggest other changes can be made after cloning in the hole, it would be worth making the point that you must keep away from the edges to avoid mismatch problems when you insert the edited view back into the main panorama.

Editing in a separately taken down shot (sans tripod) is not much different. The trick is to add the down shot to the PTGui project and get it aligned as well as possible with the horizontal shots by optimizing only the y,p,and r parameters of the down shot. Then output two separate equirectangular panorama images for the horizontal shots and the down shot. Open the down shot equirectangular in PTEditor and press the down arrow only (no dragging!) to position the window on the nadir. Extract the view to a file. Then do exactly the same for the main panorama image. Merge the two extracted views, which will be reasonably well aligned, and return to PTEditor to insert the result back into the main panorama.

John

Thanks for the comments I have upgraded the flash files to reflect the first two points you made. I have to admit that I didn't know about zooming. Another useful tip...How did you learn all of this laugh

I havn't tried including the down shot in PTGui, I will give it a go.

Jer.. (Is that short for Jeremy)?
I have included a zipped version as you requested.

Cheers

Martin

Hi Martin
Many thanks for the zip file and link to "Wink"

I have been thinking of creating a tutorial for our school and Wink looks like the answer...
