Re: Virtual Tour in DeavlVR and Flash, feedback needed

Personally I hate the flashy squared small layouts that for sure tells me that it was all made from a program's template with (almost) one click without any pioneering design from scratch...

I for sure would make something like the Deval version (fullscreen) and something that many others have already made and it is more to the taste that I like...

eg. www.gillesvidal.com/s-o-r/index.htm

Friendly Nikos

Re: Nodal Point of Sigma 8mm 1:3.5 EX DG Fisheye Lens

90.5mm should be fine for 4 shots around. This will minimise parallax at the horizontal level but not necessarily at the zenith and nadir, since the entrance pupil is not at a single point. See these links:

www.panoramas.dk/panorama/fisheye-NPP/parallax.ht...
www.johnhpanos.com/epcalib.htm
www.rosaurophotography.com/html/technical7.html

Also, since your head is not a spherical head, you should consider tilting the camera upwards by 7 degrees or so, to close the zenith hole that would otherwise occur.

John

Can somebody assist or help me on how to find the Nodal Point (Entrance Pupil) of my Sigma 8mm EX DG Fisheye Lens, please?
Re: How to find control Points On cloudy sky? Using PTGui

Can you explain exactly how the images were shot for your panorama? i.e. is it a single row 360 degree panorama, or multi row , or a 360x180 (x around +zenith and nadir) etc. It's difficult to know how to advise in detail without knowing exactly what it is you are trying to stitch. If it's a single row, then one image would not be expected to be completely sky.

John

Re: Has anyone messed around with grid computing for stitching?

There's no way you can do this using PTGui as the application needs to be xGrid aware. Also the biggest bottleneck would be copying all the source images and intermediate images back and fourth across the network to each machine.

The only way to use multiple computers on a network for stitching is to use Apples Qmaster application. Qmaster ships with FinalCut Studio and can distribute command line apps across the network. The benefit is Qmaster distributes each job to one Mac only. So at no time does more than one Mac work on stitching one final image. This reduces network issues and I guess works better than having multi-macs trying to stitch one image.

Getting it set-up and working requires a lot of knowledge and time which unless you have a programming background would be extremely difficult.

Matt

Re: mouseover hotspots possible?

Tourweaver 4.0 can do so. Add a transparent button on each person's face and a textarea above each head to show that button' hints(each person's name and introduction), and when mouse is over one of the buttons, related hints will be shown. You can add as many buttons as you like, they are unvisible. It is a new feature in this version 4.0.

Re: stitching--objects different sizes

It would be nice if you could upload some images somewhere so we could see exactly what the problem is. If you stitch the images in the usual way and output the result as a layered PSD file, you should find that the images match up correctly, with no distortion issues. It's then easy to assess the parallax by switching the top layer on and off.

John

Pete's Collapsable Pano Pole

Hi Guys,

Yesterday morning while doing my weekend shopping in ALDI I saw some tubular fishing poles for sale. There was a package deal with a 6m & 4m fishing pole, both of them for £14.99. Although I hadn't decided what sort of pole panos I wanted to try, I bought it.

The 6m pole has a base diameter of 35mm, and has 6 sections. The top two sections are whippy, so I concentrated on the 4 bigger sections and got a pole about 4m long with a tip diameter of 15mm, thinking if that has a too much flex in it I can just use 3 sections.

The day started well. I was able to plug the end of the 3rd & 4th pole sections giving me pole options of a 4.2m or 3.15m pole. I incorporated a bolt in the plug, a shaved synthetic cork from a wine bottle, so that I could fasten on my panohead bracket etc. At this point I was feeling good about my progress. Then I had realised that I had a problem, I needed 2m arms or a radio shutter release. Nevertheless, I rushed into a premature pole pano using 3 sections to see what it was like. It was not good. I had the pole pointing upwards and outwards from my first floor balcony at about 45°. Without a radio remote shutter release I had to use the timer. This gave me about 10 secs. to press the shutter then push out the pole into position, which took 9 secs. Once the pole was out it oscillated for about another 10 secs. So the movement at the end of the pole meant that there would be significant parallax errors. I then had to pull in the pole, press the shutter and repeat the exercise. When I processed it, it was not good for several reasons, although most of the problems would be solved with a radio remote shutter release. With an RF release I could have waited until the camera stopped oscillating, moved myself out of the frame etc. and taken an adequate shot.

So I decided to have a try with my infrared remote release. It is not easy to do this as you need to be in front of the camera, and with a wide lens there is no keeping out of picture. This time I had the pole out horizontally from my balcony. The first shot went OK. On the second shot, as I was rotating the pole it collapsed

Fortunately for me I was not shooting outboard of a boat, hot-air balloon or the battlements of a castle. The extended section of pole with the camera attached swung and crashed not into water or wall but into a wall of beans that were growing from the garden up to my balcony. That protruding element of my 8mm Sigma was not damaged.

So the conclusion is that if you make a 3 section pano pole with an ALDI fishing pole don't use it horizontally.

Cheers,

Pete

Thanks lads!
I don't need the very latest technology. What I'm hoping for from the new announcement is whatever the older FF Canon (if I get one) model, will be much cheaper after the announcement. If the 5D dropped a few hundred, all the more for glass money! I already have the mac etc for processing.

Fergal.

Re: More parallax error towards to the edges of Sigma 8mm but not to the center

Thanx Dorin and Hans for the info you posted.

Generally I think that stitching a spherical panorama with fisheye lens is different each time... and applying a template isn't always working (at least for me so far)... maybe because I'm shooting 4 images with -15° tilt (+ 1 zenith) and maybe I'm not having exactly the same degrees each time, or maybe a minor tripod movement occurred while shooting, etc (the camera is mounted perfectly on the upper arm)

I've tried a template which was "too good to be true" on another new stitch and it had errors... so I had to create CPs from scratch (Auto align and then manual edit).

Every new panorama is a new challenge, and it is very rare that with one click of optimization the result will be "too good 2b true"...

For example I was astonished with the result that PTGUI gave me with one auto align - optimize.

On the following panorama a too good to be true was only with 2 or 3 clicks!!

www.360visits.gr/en/panoinfo.php?cat=85

If you look on the zenith... the electricity wires were an absolute line!! No Stitching errors at all, even though they are so thin!

On the other hand on the next panorama

www.360visits.gr/en/panoinfo.php?cat=42 (Marker 3 - on the bottom of the page)

the electricity wires had errors and it was difficult to add CPs there, so I decided to erase them in Photoshop.

I guess there are always ways to defeat errors, (in PTGUI or Photoshop) and that is what makes each project interesting...

Lately I tried/bought Tufuse Pro and I was very impressed by its results and the more coherent adjustments prior to Fusing the images, so I guess one more thing was added to the interesting procedure.

Nikos

Re: Panos with a pole from a fishing-net

Pete,

the Aldi-pole is made of thin aluminium tube that is octagonal shaped - which makes it nice to use with 4/8 shots around. Of course it sags a bit (app. 1/2" with 1kg of camera mounted on top) when used horizontally, but the amount of sag is the same wether you point the camera up, down, front or back. So in total you´re not off the NPP.

I would avoid high fishing poles, they are not that stable. You might investigate further in masts for amateur radio. If you have a look at my earlier postings here in the forum you can find a link for a portable 6 meter pole. That is not the one I own but it´s comparable in price and height.

But with the Aldi-pole I also reach 3,50 meters height (putting it on top of my photo bag which is hanging around my neck), that is mostly enough height to get an overview.

Regards, Martin

IVRPA at Photokina 2008 - Call for volunteers

Photokina takes place from September 23th to 28th 2008 in Cologne/Germany. The IVRPA will have its booth in hall 9, amongst others like Fotocommunity, the biggest online photographic community and PlusX award.

As already announced in our contest there will be an exhibition of prints, high-resolution gigapixel images and also interactive VR panoramas. We also plan to have presentations, showcasing the work and techniques of our trade.

We hope to gather the interest of both the general public and our own members with different types of sessions.

One of the main goals of our presence at Photokina is to promote VR photography. Photokina provides a great platform to share ideas with other photographers and get new inputs for your own work. That is why we need members who help at our booth to answer questions and teach our visitors about VR photography.

As two years ago (see photokina06.ivrpa.org/ ), IVRPA members will once again do a live coverage of the whole fair with interactive VR panoramas. The panoramas will be stitched at the booth and be available online at photokina08.ivrpa.org/ .

We will try to do a group reservation for the accommodation. For members that help at our booth for 2 days and more IVPRA will pay for their accommodation cost. Since we have to move forward with the booking of the accommodation, the DEADLINE FOR THE GROUP RESERVATION is Friday August 22th 2008.

If you want to join us and help at our booth, please fill in your details at photokina08.ivrpa.org/participate/booth . You can also fill in there your details for the group reservation.

If you have inputs and wishes for sessions at our IVRPA booth, you can propose them at photokina08.ivrpa.org/participate/sessions .

See you in Cologne!

The IVRPA Board of Directors

Michael Quan
Jan van der Woning
Ian Wood
Aldo Hoeben
Matthias Taugwalder
Gene Cooper
Jeffrey Martin

Re: Need help with

To begin with- be sure you are doing your levels adjustments in 16bit mode. This will prevent gaps from occurring in your histogram and minimize any banding when you go back to 8bit.

Secondly, to prevent the JPEG algorithm from introducing banding into your sky, try adding a very slight bit of gaussian noise to it (just the sky that is). You will end up with a bigger file, but it will help reduce the banding in the final compressed image.

If you convert from equirectangular with Pano2VR you can quickly pan around to the centre point you want with this application too. Saves the time it takes to re-blend and re-render with Autopano Pro or PTGui.
Mark
PS There are lots of other tools in Pano2VR to save as 2D panoramas as well as joined-up 360s.

Remember to shoot in portrait mode to increase the vertical field of view and to allow plenty of overlap between adjacent shots.
Mark
PS Neither will you have to use expensive Olympus branded memory cards for your panoramas.

Re: Color matching on a handheld nadir.

John,

Once again thank you...that fixes the problem!!

Gus,

Basically, I was just trying out different ways to successfully fill the nadir hole under different circumstances, i.e (hardwood vs carpet vs brick, etc)

The reason that I shoot 2 nadirs 180's is because I was following a tutorial that said to. Considering it takes 45 secs more to shot and makes the nadir hole smaller in the end (a def plus) I figured why not. My confusion was on the proper use of the viewpoint feature. Thank you for pointing this out.

Nonetheless, my overall question was how one gets a proper color blend when inserting the handheld shot into the nadir hole. Clearly the patch tool works for when you don't have lines in the floor or patterns. I was looking for advice for more problematic floors.

James

Re: New panos with an ecclesiastical theme

Hi Guys,

Several months ago some guy posted a church interior pano which I thought was technically very good, it's a pity I've lost the details. But he did the windows cut & paste, and did a superb job. I immediately felt that he had the best approach, even 'tho I've never done as well as he did.

Nowadays I shoot RAW and bracket pretty well everything, as much to cover difficult light metering situations as intending to do HDR. I rarely do HDR. I do not like the funny, fake colour effects that you mention, which are so often produced. I find that PTGui's exposure fusion/enfuse does a more satisfying job. However none of these techniques can cope with the range of light levels in a dark church with sunlit windows. So I find that cut & paste is the only way, at present, to cope with the problem, even then it isn't easy to make it look natural.

I was serious about my forgetting to take the extra shots with widely different exposure settings, OK I wasn't serious about Altzheimer's, or was I? I can't remember

Recently, here, there was a pano in an aircraft cockpit which I found interesting. It was a very well done job. The dark cockpit was well exposed and the bright outside perfectly exposed and sharp. That sounds good, but I found the exterior too good. I am beginning to think that we are being too clever and that, at times we need to incorporate into our panos zones of 'low' quality to give impact to the prime zones. I suppose that it is similar to using a wide aperture to give a narrow depth of field in normal photography.

I wonder if I have had too much Communion Wine

Cheers,

Pete

My view on fullscreen is the same as with websites playing sound: By all means, offer it, but let me as the visitor choose whether to switch it on or not.
If I want sound, I'll hit the play button, and if I want the pano to display fullscreen (ie FULLscreen), I'll hit the "fullscreen" button.
gus

Hi,
Let me suggest "superrune", or "spherical to cubic", that you can use in step 6 with photoshop. That way you have a picture totaly ready for pano2qtvr/pano2vr. I think you understand if you look at:
www.superrune.com/technical/software_spheretocubi...
Best regards,
Johan

Re: Flash Panorama Player customizing?

Thanks for all the kind replies!! It might be the right place and momento to ask for some help here..

I am currently embeding some panoramas in my blog. I use Immervision´s Pure Tools and have succesfully embeded Java and Quicktime panos, but have been unsuccesfull with the Flash ones (to the point that I am currently using Viewat.org for that). My code and programming knowledge is VERY limited (I am basically a photographer..) The script I currently use (Flash, produced by Pure Tools) is for panos with all the files in the same directory. It is as follows:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Frameset//EN" "<a href="http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/frameset.dtd"
Hi Mark,

About the photo-mount, I designed in that way to give the look as were in a photo album.
I will use it here and in another photo forum with still photographers.

The projection is cylindrical, of course.

The clouds need special attention becouse of "clonning by the wind" but for another important reason if control points are automate generated, due to CP asigned on moving clouds the "formation" will drag and break the non moving features, which are, usually, harder to fix, so the repetitive clone like cloud formation must be fixed instead at the retouching stage.

thanks for reply,
Dorin

Re: "Virtual Tour" a magic phrase

Here's the traffic results for the first full month after changing the Titles of the webpages from just the name of the location/event to "A Virtual Tour of" followed by the name.

The location I was keeping track of, the Sandia Peak Tramway, was the Entry Page 1009 times in July 08.

It averaged being the Entry Page 230 times amonth before the title change and before www.SandiaPeak.com added the link to the page in April 08 which Hans pointed out

For all of July, SandiaPeak.com was the Referring Site to VirtualAlbuquerque.com 528 times

Here's the really simple math for the Sandia Peak Tramway page

1009 Total times the Entry Page
528 Minus Referrals from SandiaPeak.com
230 Minus the average times its normally the Entry Page
251 Additional Times it was the Entry Page

I think this has something to do with both the improved ranking on a Google Search for "sandia peak tramway" (moved from 7th to 6th) and the change in the Title being a more attractive choice to click on.

"A Virtual Tour of" was added to the other 27 location/event Titles and I think it may be bringing in a different type of Visitor because the Pages Viewed per Visit went from an average of 2.19 pages in all of 2007 to 2.75 pages in July

The Visits for July 08 was 22,253, down 14% from the same month in 2007, but up 30% from July 2006

But Pages Viewed went up in July this year to 61,397, a 5% gain over July 2007 and up 20% over 2006

Visitors are staying longer and looking at more of the Virtual Images and Video Clips.

If this continues, it will let me sell more advertising on the site and get more paying locations & events like restaurants and hotels.

I really think the phrase "Virtual Tour" in the Titles had something to do with the additional 251 Entry Pages that aren't specific to the SandiaPeak.com website.

Doug Aurand
Albuquerque, NM

Thanks for your comments John! Now when you mentioned it I see how badly leveled it is. I thought there were no good references for leveling it but now when I took a look at it again I see that I actually have plenty to go on.
Re: hdr help

Community Edition has the same functions other than output size. Currently we do not have a trial version for Standard Edition but you can email us for a refund if you really don't like your purchase. We are here to promote HDR tonemapping to mainstream; we are not here to make a quick buck and the current price tag also shows that.

Once you have the Standard Edition you will notice the tonemapping speed is often 5 to 10 times compared to our competitor. You can get more things done in a short period of time!

Re: My first aerial (mast) pano

I started using my fiberglass pole again after radically simplifying my setup. I took the removeable center pole from my manfrotto with my NN5L attached and attached it to my fiberglass pole with quick ties. If I have some elevated ground or logs at the beach, I am able to adjust the camera setting and raise it vertically. If I want to get a spherical panorama, I am not able to extend the pole as high because I need to lower and raise the pole to make the arm settings at +30, -30, +90, -90. You need visual cues to for this to have the effect. Otherwise people cannot tell that the center of the panorama is elevated. If I take a cylindrical panorama then I can raise the pole to about 10 meters / 35 feet before the flexing becomes too much of a problem. I even foolishly carried the pole up a mountain trail. My back is still telling me about that

Re: More Natural Looking Sky - GRAY reference card

Fergal, There aren't any settings. You just click on a part of the image that ought to be neutral. Try different areas until you like the result. From Photoshop's Help pages:

"To adjust the white balance quickly, select the White Balance tool , and then click an area in the preview image that should be a neutral gray or white. The Temperature and Tint properties adjust to make the selected color exactly neutral (if possible). If you’re clicking whites, choose a highlight area that contains significant white detail rather than a specular highlight. You can double-click the White Balance button to reset White Balance to As Shot."

John

Hi Michael,

I tested what you described yesterday on a Mac and I could not get firefox or Safari to behave the way you describe. Using the appropriate keys caused the link to be opened in a new tab (and ONLY in a new tab) or in a new window (ditto) and without changing the current tab/window.

I will revisit this again tomorrow hopefully to do more tests. In the meantime I'd appreciate comments from other Mac users on this as I have not been able to reproduce this problem.

Thanks
James

Re: Car Interior with blended outside

Thanks for the complements,
Jaaab this was done with almost all layer masks. After opening the two panos hold the shift key and use the move tool to drag one pano onto the other. The shift key will center the two images. Drag the image with the windows you want to replace on top of the image you want to reveal. Create a layer mask on the new layer and paint out the windows using the erase tool. If you make a mistake then switch to the black color swatch and you can remove the unwanted mask. I use a combination of the different modes (bruch, pencil, block) with more brush at the edges for the blending. Also use some color replace tool and replace color function to clean up purple fringing and smooth out the edges.

You do get faster with practice
Good Luck,
TTurner (not a Photoshop expert, just happy to find what works when I stumble upon it) Fluid Mask Photoshop plug in was noted earlier and that looks much quicker but costs $239. May have to try the demo.

Re: PTViewer over PURE?

Each browser gets one copy of the JRE (plugin) If you open one of Hans' applets in Firefox, you will see a little Java tray icon -- if you are using a 1.6.0.x version of Java.

If you then open another one in IE, you will see another Java tray icon. You will have two different copies of the JRE running. One for each browser. If you open another applet in either of the two browsers, you will then share that JRE for that browser between the two applets

But sometime in the future, that will change. You will be able to specify separate JRE's for each applet if you choose. You will also set the memory for each applet -- if you choose.

Here's how your applet tag will look -- sometime in the future.

<APPLET archive="my_applet.jar" code="MyApplet" width="300" height="300">
<PARAM name="java_arguments" value="-Xmx256m -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true">
<PARAM name="separate_jvm" value="true">
</APPLET>

Yeah, I know, it's ugly. I'm shouting at the Java Dev team to make it simpler. Really, a GUI is needed to set all the possible options for the applet tag -- sometime in the future...

Here's the doc's:

jdk6.dev.java.net/plugin2/

Vilmer
Thanx for the link

I agree, Hilton needs to move ahead

But I think I'm off the hook, according to the guy who got me the Hilton specs, all he does is supply them with the JPEG strip and they convert to Hotmedia.

Wyndham hotels had me supply the iPIX files for one of their hotels I shot a few years back, and they coverted them to Hotmedia too.

BTW I'm an iPIX user and the Interactive Studio software was a complete re-write of their sofware in something like 2002 with a couple major updates before they went bankrupt. Unfortunately it was still primarily designed for 2 fisheye stitching and the plug-in that allowed stitching from the Nikkor 10.5mm and Sigma 8mm was expensive

Thanx again for the information

Doug Aurand
Albuquerque, NM

template processed image

Having finally rebuilt my kart into a new chassis after the great crash of 07 I thought that it would make an interesting exercise in working in a very confined space and testing my batch template.

I used a 055 Manfrotto tripod with no leg extension and centre column raised ( because of the lack of space) and this may well have been a mistake. As you can see there are some bad stitches in the z and n area but as I don't normally have this problem I'm putting it down to very slight tripod movement when changing the camera orientation.
www.bhphoto.biz/kart/kartbatch.html

I quickly fixed this with the addition of half a dozen cp's manually placed and then produced a .hdr file in PTGui (for Mac ) and tonemapped it with Photomatix pro with a lights/shadow map layer for that gritty urban look which is such a fad at the moment.
www.bhphoto.biz/kart/kartlsmap.html

Even though this wasn't a 100% good example of use of a template (which I normally achieve) it reduced the production time enormously and does demonstrate the value of this technique. It does however demonstrate how easily operator/equipment error can foul things up

I used a 6000x3000 equirect and as I recall a setting of 51% jpeg compression in Cubic Convertor. It might have been a little less. That's the beauty of CC you can see the result as you try and squeeze the file size down.

It's always a compromise - sometimes adding blur to the sky can help but usually I am just very careful with the amount of sharpening added ( I use a layer with a high pass filter blended in Hard Light and the adjust the blend weight) and then play with compression settings. An even blue tone like that produces the most problems.

They may be cheaper too and then you'll want/need video distribution amps rather than computer graphics signal splitter/amps.

This is probably the sort of project where it would be besst to prototype something, before making a large investment, using both approaches and let the client choose?

Andrew

Tom,

The Sigma 8mm f3.5 FE produces a slightly lower resolution 360x180 on the 12.8MP fullframe sensor Canon 5D (just over 6000x3000) than it does on my lowly 6MP Nikon D40 cropped sensor DSLR.

If you got a Canon 5D then the Canon 15mm fullframe FE is the way to get the best resolution with relatively few shots - 6-around+Z+N. Here is a sample image set:
www.chem.ox.ac.uk/oxfordtour/canon5dworkflow/jpgs... (38MB!)

Stitched with Autopano Pro this image set produced a 360x180 of just over 11,700x5850 pixels!

Andrew

Re: Panos inside pubs

I did bracket the shots, but that was only to give me a choice of which set to use. Sometimes deciding what exposure to use can be tricky with indoor shots that have dark areas and very bright windows.

However bracketing is not good for HDR as with long exposure times there is subject movement between shots, (that is within the set of 3 bracketed shots), which blurs the combined image.

Ginge
your mirror-ball is decend and fits into the image for my opinion.
I like the very good exposure with the dramatic skies though.

The -90 down and +90 up are mostly not that interesting in a pano at all. So putting a logo or a cap is suitable.
(And saves time )
If you would print them these parts would get cut off anyway.

Ciao
Mike
www.360de.de

The image must show a famous landmark of any these cities that is instantly recognisable.
The panoramic image will go onto a circular billboard with a circumference of 9,5 metres.
Sigma 10-20mm DIY Lens Collar

Using a 76mm Telescope Tube Ring and a Manfrotto 323 Quick Change Rect. Plate Adapter

Searching for a lens collar for my Sigma 10-20mm lens as a lightweight means of shooting a cylindrical set of photos in portrait mode,
I recently ordered a pair of 76mm Telescope Tube Rings from SCS Astro.
The rings are only supplied in pairs but at £14.95 a pair price is not a problem.
The Sigma lens fits snugly into a telescope ring between the lens zoom and focus rings.
The telescope rings are supplied with several screws and washers and are 1/4" threaded.
I removed the manfrotto plate centre screw and used a supplied screw to fix the telescope ring across a narrow edge of the manfrotto 200PL plate.
A threaded hole on the plate exactly aligns the telescope ring across the edge of the plate. Two further holes on the plate then accepted a pair of grub screws which prevent the telescope ring from twisting.
Fixing the plate to the Manfrotto 323 on a tripod finally located the lens conveniently at the NPP!

Links to parts:

SCS Astro

07369 Telescope Tube Rings, 76mm ID £14.95

www.scsastro.co.uk/it170013.htm

Manfrotto 323 Quick Change Rect.
Re: Question on new stitching technology

You can't currently stitch the Sunex 5.6mm directly in Autodesk Stitcher as you get the "black triangle" at the zenith/nadir. You have to pre-process the images using the Sunex De-Warper plugin for Photoshop first, then the images stitch perfectly in Stitcher 5.7.1

Andy Baddeley
www.360tvr.com

Re: Bracketing exposure when shooting in RAW?

I use a handy program called Bracketeer. It batches the whole set of files. You just tell it 3 EV or 5 EV change. It can output 16bit tiff files. I then edit in photoshop then let PTgui take it.

Did you save your final tiff file in layers? Maybe that is why it was so huge. I output to QTVR and the use cubicconverter to pull out the nadir shot.

If understand you correctly, you're changing the focal length and/or aperture when you're doing the nadir and zenith only?

That's unusual as far as I know - I'm sure someone will correct me!

If you're using PTgui, you can adjust the priority of the nadir and zenith so it only uses the image data for the missing holes.

Gus

Doug Aurand said:
James
With the Canon 15mm that's probably right.

There's a possibility you'll need 8 around plus the Zenith & Nadir, since the Nikkor 10.5mm has wider FOV than the 15mm and traditionally needs 6+Z+N

Doug Aurand
Albuquerque, NM

AFAIK the Canon 15mm FE is specifically designed as a fullframe FE for fullframe sensor cameras such as the Canon 5D. Whens used with a fullframe sesnor Canon body you'd need 6-around +Z+N for 360x180 coverage.

There's little point in using it on a cropped sensor Canon camera like the 450D. But if you did you'd need many more images than 6-around+Z+N for 360x180 coverage.

Look at the Tokina 10-17mm zoom FE instead, that seems to be well thought of. Or the Sigma 8mm FE f3.5 for fewer shots for 360x180 coverage.

Andrew

Thanks for the info. Don't know what to tell you. I've only tested it with Java 1.5 / 1.6.

Two things you can do. You can update your JRE -- real easy and you get better performance.

Or you can try setting your JRE memory settings higher.

Look at:

pancyl.com/help.htm

Re: canvas size etc in hugin 0.7.0

Hi Lennart

I tried the same pano in both the Beta version and the latest pre-release.

Both versions ignore manually entered canvas re Panorama Image sizes on the Stitcher tab. I can only get smaller sizes when I set the parameter Downscale Final Image size in the Preferences to something smaller than 100%.

I am using Hugin on XP with Nona as stitcher and could not find any other settings to convince Hugin to size the pano to a certain width/height.

Since I have the same problem in the latest Default Installation, I was wondering if you customized anything or if you are using another Stitcher or Blender to get the desired results.

thanks
Klaus

Re: Angle up or angle down?

softboot
The reason the 60° zenith is used is because there can be little or no detail in a 90°, straight up shot of a clear blue sky. By only tilting up 60° the shot covers the zenith and reaches down to details in the horizontal shots so Control Point in PTGui can be generated

If you're shooting a room with a super detailed ceiling, it won't make a difference what angle the zenith is shot at.

It seems like you're looking for a "one solution fits all" approach and there isn't one.

Doug Aurand
Albuquerque, NM

Re: Product dedicated for Peleng and Zenitar fisheye?

Nick,

"Do you use Nikon 16mm on 14N often? Does it give better pictures from 10.5mm on D2x"
Well, the two set ups are very similar in terms of FOV. I use exactly the same shooting sequences and get very comparable images. The D2X (mounted on the NN5) may have a very slight edge, but noticeable only at the extremes of cropping. But not even sure of that as my initial work with the 14N (mounted on the panosaurus) was with jpgs and now I shoot raw to tif with the D2X. Haven't compared with a raw to tif with the 14N. As the 14N is zero'd on the Panosaurus I have left it there and not bothered finding the NPP with it on the NN5, leaving that head dedicated for the D2X. I need both a FF camera for my 20mm and 28mm lenses AND the crop factor of the D2X for boosted telephoto work. So I swap out a lot but always have a pan head ready.

And just what surprise gadget/gizmo might you have in the works?

Peter Patricelli
www.flyfishingfotography.com

Re: Please help me blend this panorama...!

It is only the lens "naked".

Mark and mdediavets my main thinking for shooting at -15° is that the useful area around the tripod on the nadir that will be produced only by the 4 images will be a bit more away from the lens edges where image quality is a lot blurry and with darker tonality as of vignetting. I'm saying that it does not eliminates the quality problem totally but I think it makes things a bit better. So when I manual blend the extra nadir shot on Photoshop, the edges of the information around the tripod from the 4 images and the edges of the nadir shot blends a bit better, and tends to have equal quality than shooting the 4 images at 0°.

The same thinking applies for the extra zenith shot I take.

That's my way of thinking and doing it, and I'm not saying it is the best thing someone can do.

Friendly Nikos
