Maybe the threaded part of your tripod is a fraction too long and it hits and loosens the tension screw. Try to to put a washer or something else beetween your tripod and the NN - just something to check if that´s the reason. And always rotate your NN clockwise.

"and is mounted in off center tripod hole"
That was exactly the point. Why else should you use the off-center thread except for gaining length.

Hi,
here is another example of a design similar to the NNs: www.roundabout-np.de/pageID_5789279.html
No doubt that this one and the pano-maxx will do their job I think that the real difference is the service and support for the users from Nick and Bill. NN is established, who will remember these in a couple of years?

Pete,
the Aldi-pole is made of thin aluminium tube that is octagonal shaped - which makes it nice to use with 4/8 shots around. Of course it sags a bit (app. 1/2" with 1kg of camera mounted on top) when used horizontally, but the amount of sag is the same wether you point the camera up, down, front or back. So in total you´re not off the NPP.
I would avoid high fishing poles, they are not that stable. You might investigate further in masts for amateur radio. If you have a look at my earlier postings here in the forum you can find a link for a portable 6 meter pole. That is not the one I own but it´s comparable in price and height.
But with the Aldi-pole I also reach 3,50 meters height (putting it on top of my photo bag which is hanging around my neck), that is mostly enough height to get an overview.

Hello Henri,
there are some Sigma 8/4 versions around, but no 8/3,5 ones. I asked Sigma, too, due to confusing information in their brochures, websites etc. The answer I got was "production date unknown". So finally I was glad to get a NOS 8/4MF (2nd link) in addition to the Pentax 10-17.
Sigma 8/4 later version with K10D: tinyurl.com/4oqg9l

Hi Soda,
it is possible to make panoramas with the 185 Raynox. The usual setup is: camera in portrait mode, zoomed in until the image circle touches the top and bottom end of the ccd surface. 4 around will give you a panorama of about 8800 x 4400 px with a 8MP camera. At least app will be able to process these pictures, and I´m sure PTgui and Hugin will do, too.
But - the 185 has a fov less than 180 degs. With 4 shots around you will have blind areas in nadir and zenith as shown in these sample pictures (there are errors, yes, but: handheld, plumb bob, hotshoe bubble level, first pano ever of the chap who made it):
For the first tests you can build a simple NPA from a plumbers clamp and a piece of aluminium bar. NPPis roughly estimated 10mm behind the front lens.
Volker from www.panoseite.de/ has also made a lot ofpanos with this lens. There are lots of good ideas for NPAs and also sample workflows (sorry, German language only). If you have questions for Volker maybe I can be of assistance... .

Michael,
if you set up your Peleng like this, you should get clear and sharp pictures:
The Witten - Hammerteich panorama was shot with my Peleng (4+1+1) - one of my early experiments:
www.oldie-werkstatt.de/panorama
By the way, what camera do you use with your Peleng? There are adapters for Petax cameras available which are unable to make it focus at infinity.

Nicos,
as you can see in Hans example the center of the lens is identical to the center of the image circle (red circle with red centermark). You can´t draw this red circle in an image shot with a diagonal fisheye lens.

Hi ,
www.spiderbeam.bnet might be an interesting adress to have a look for high-level tripods. Look at their aluminium masts if you wat heights of 10 or more meters..
Also the fiberglass pole looks very similar to solutions avaliable for photographers. Just use the lower half of the 12 meter pole...
Better sit down before you compare prices...

Hi,
let me tell you some general things to the Peleng. I have mine for a few months and it was quite a way to get acceptable sharp pictures. But maybe its no big deal with your Peleng.
At the first rind from the front lens you select the f-stop. Pelengs are. For a first test select f8 please. 5,6 or less won´t bring you sharp results.
Very Peleng-specific - the f-lock ring (second ring). I´m the opinion that the ring in the photo above is in the wrong position, but you can find that out easily by yourself. Please select f8 fist (front ring). Now take a look through the viewfinder and turn the middle ring clockwise. The image in the viewfinder must get darker, than the aperture is adjusted right. That is why there is only very little movement in the middle ring atf 3,5.
The third ring - it shows you the depth of field depending from the f-stop. There are two f marks to the left and to the right of the yellow line. These marks show you the depth of field.
Set the infinity mark of the fourth ring a bit left of the f8 mark on the third ring. This gives you the maximum dof.
In Summary - first ring to "8" - second ring turned clockwise til it stops. - fourth ring infinity slightly left of third rings f8 mark right from the yellow line.
With an exposure time of lets say 1/90 at sunlight this MUST bring you sharp results.
If not, there might be an adapter problem which especially appears in combination with Pentax adapters. there are adaptors on the market which mafe sharp images impossible. That´s what happened to me, but thanks to my workshop I was able to solve this problem in a simple way.
But please, make some tests first. Have a look at www.oldie-werkstatt.de/panorama . The "Hammerteich" pano was taken with my Peleng. It has other weaknesses, but that´s another story. At the moment I´m glad that I brought my Peleng to work...
Regards from Germany, Martin
